With demand for durian soaring in China, The Thailand Durian Association has called on the country’s government to establish a rail link to China, according to Asia News Network. The association suggests linking Thailand’s rail network with the Laos-China railway, which should be built by 2024.
Phanusak Saiphanich, chairman of the Thai Durian Association, said:
“The Chinese consume an average of 2kg of durian per person per year and the market still has room to expand, but there is a problem with distribution.”
Thailand’s durian is currently sent to China by sea and road, but the industry is struggling to keep up with demand.
