New Zealand switches focus for apple exports from Europe to Asia

Demand for apples in Asia is on the rise. Southern Hemisphere exports to Asia are now outpacing shipments to Europe, and this trend will become even more noticeable in the coming years, according to a report by Topinfo. It is not only China that is increasing its imports – Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, and India are all demanding more apples.
New Zealand is the country that has most redirected its exports from Europe to Asia. 15 years ago, it sent 70% of its exports to Europe and only 15% to Asia, whereas today, only 25% goes to Europe and more than 50% to Asia. The change of destination had a strong impact on the varietal composition of exports. The success of the Gala is largely explained by the migration of exports to Asia.
