Aweta’s advanced quality control and packing systems

TECH-aweta-Qpack

Ideal for ready-to-eat or ripe fruit, the AFS system is based on acoustic firmness resonance. It analyses vibration patterns to determine maturity level (Brix grade) and can also identify possible internal defects. “Consumers choose by appearance, so the sorting needs to be done internally to fully satisfy them with good eating qualities,” said Norman van der Gaag, sales manager at Aweta. “The year-round supply of ripe tropical fruit requires imports of many origins and qualities, which implies a second selection needs to be made.” Developed 12 years ago for apples, the technology has also been used successfully for the last 5 years for subtropical fruit, mainly mangoes and avocados, as well as pears and stone fruit. More than 200 machines have already been supplied with internal scanning by Aweta.
Flex Filler and Q-pack automated packing
Packing automation is another major development at Aweta and reduces labor and the manual handling of products. Flex Filler is the best solution for most fruit, such as apples and pears, stone fruit and avocados. The unique concept is based on heads which enter a box and smoothly fill it from the bottom part of the head, which gradually opens. The automation also generates an increase in productivity and allows full traceability of the product by box unit, in the most optimum and fruit friendly way.  A specific packing line has also been created for cucumbers. Called Q-pack, it can pack 6,000 cucumbers an hour. “A Q-pack line pays for itself in 3-5 years, depending on use, compared with the ongoing cost of hand packing,” Norman explained. “Both systems are unique in the market and the top performers,” he said. Several Flex Filler lines are already in use in the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, the UK and Spain.

Cutting-edge melon innovations at HM.Clause

SALAD-var-CLAUSE

The leading player in melon breeding once again hosted a special melon event in Murcia in early July, well attended by major melon European traders.  The event also provided an excellent platform for exchanging views about market expectations and consumer trends. Some varieties in particular garnered significant interest from the visitors. Among them is Karman, a LSL Charentais variety well-known for its attractive looks and great taste – but also the 2014 novelty Soliman, which retains Karman’s best qualities, but is better adapted for the earlier slot thanks to its larger fruit size. The LSL Galia range also caught our visitors’ eye.  At the top of the list was Capoeira, a reliable melon increasing in the overseas season, especially in Brazil – not forgetting Lambada for Murcia, which produces high marketable yield of attractive, sweet melons. SAPHIR, a unique variety, was also much appreciated by melon lovers and gourmets.

Fioretto™, the sweet cauliflower stick by Tokita Seed

SaladTokita

Fioretto™ is a new, long-stem cauliflower with a small head and long, sweet green stem, developed by Tokita Seed, a Japanese seed company.  This new variety will leave no consumers indifferent if they pay attention to details, freshness and taste. The catalyst for this new cauliflower variety came from a Tokita Seed employee that shared his thoughts aloud: “Why can´t we have a cauliflower without a long stem?”. After considering, assessing and trying it, the company finally launched a new variety with these characteristics and named it Fioretto™, meaning “little flower” in Italian. Its appearance is attractive with its white tops supported by long shining stems.  Fresh or cooked, this new variety stands out for its taste and sweetness. Whereas with the cauliflower it takes some time to separate the edible part from the bulk, with Fioretto™ it is as simple as choosing the bouquet and that´s all.  With a softer texture than the cauliflower, Fioretto™ has just the right degree of firmness. Convenient and easy to prepare, this new variety is cut into individual stems weighing between 10 and 20 g each. Commercially available in three varieties with a period of 65, 80, and 100 days of ripening respectively, Fioretto™ is for professional growers and home gardeners.
