Climact: first carbon neutral lemons are produced in Spain
The Spanish company Agribio Terra Organic, has become the first to develop a carbon-neutral lemon in the citrus market.
To achieve neutrality, a comprehensive calculation process has been carried out for all the inputs used and the emissions that are generated during the different fruit processes, from the field to the supermarket. All this to identify those areas in which it is possible to reduce emissions, and then proceed to offset them.

What is a carbon neutral product?
Products become carbon neutral when their carbon emissions have been calculated and compensate for what they have produced via carbon offsetting projects. Offsetting carbon emissions, in addition to avoidance and reduction, is an important step in holistic climate action.
Carbon neutral does not mean carbon-free. Carbon-free or zero-carbon products are those that do not generate any carbon emissions during the manufacturing or operational process. As a matter of fact, there are no examples (yet) of carbon-free products as every product carries emissions derived from its cultivation and transport.
The search for carbon neutrality must be a totally transparent and independently certified process. Therefore, Agribio Terra Organic has wanted to be accompanied during the whole process by the German consultancy Climate Partner.
For the compensation process, the Spanish company has focused on environmental projects, such as the reforestation of forests in Europe, but also on social projects, such as the construction of a hydroelectric plant in the DR Congo, with which to help reduce CO2 emissions in other collectivities.
Currently, achieving carbon neutrality has become one of the most popular objectives within the sustainability goals of companies, which is also in line with the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda.
In this case, Agribio is the first company on the market to achieve total neutrality for lemons.
