Fruit prices in Germany soar

In Germany, food prices are soaring and bottlenecks emerging in supply chains due to pandemic-related distortions in global logistics chains, according to the Federal Association of the Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry.

Top Agrar reports that fats, oils and certain additives such as B. Dextrose have become extremely scarce, with price increases of up to 30%. Poor harvest expectations for fruit and vegetables are also driving up prices, particularly of cherries and peaches. One reason for the shortage is the far smaller fruit harvests across Europe due to severe spring frosts.

There are also cost increases for all types of packaging resulting from the lack of supplies from the US, and China buying at an early stage. Due to the increased demand in online retail, the need for cardboard packaging has increased exponentially and led to price increases of 15 to 20%.
