Zambian avocado exports get green light from EU
Zambia has been given the go ahead to begin exporting avocados to Europe, with the first consignment already underway. This follows the landmark moment when Zambia became the first southern African country to meet the phytosanitary requirements to export the fruit into Europe, said Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Green Mbozi.
The move marks the start of huge market opportunities for Zambia’s avocado growers, with the agricultural ministry in the process of finalising discussions with South African authorities to start exporting avocados to that country, according to Kenneth Msiska, director of the Plant Quarantine and Phytosanitary Service.
The Zambia Development Agency has encouraged the country’s producers to invest in avocado farming for its great market opportunities both locally and internationally.
